Understanding Hernias: When That “Small Lump” Deserves Attention

It’s easy to ignore a small bulge near your tummy button or groin—especially if it doesn’t hurt much. But that lump could be a hernia, and getting it checked early can save you a lot of discomfort later.

A hernia occurs when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Common signs include a visible bulge, discomfort when lifting or coughing, or a heavy feeling in your lower abdomen.

The good news? Hernia repair surgery is a safe and straightforward procedure, often performed using minimally invasive (keyhole) techniques. Recovery is usually quick, and most people return to normal activity within a few weeks.

If you’ve noticed a bulge that doesn’t go away, or you’re experiencing ongoing abdominal discomfort, it’s worth a conversation with your GP. Early assessment helps prevent complications and leads to a faster, easier recovery.
