Gallstones Explained: When It’s More Than Just Indigestion

Many people experience upper abdominal pain or bloating and assume it’s indigestion. In some cases, however, those symptoms could be gallstones - small stones that form in the gallbladder.

Gallstones can cause pain after eating (especially fatty foods), nausea, or discomfort under the right rib cage. While mild symptoms can sometimes be managed, ongoing or severe pain usually means the gallbladder needs to be removed.

Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery (also called keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the gallbladder through tiny incisions. Most patients go home the same day and recover within a couple of weeks.

If you’re living with recurring abdominal pain, it’s worth checking whether gallstones could be the cause. Getting the right diagnosis can bring lasting relief and peace of mind.
